What is Rose wine?

Everything you need to know about Rose!

As you might guess, almost any red grape--from cabernet sauvignon to syrah--can be used for making rose wines, however, there are some styles and grapes common choices that are preferred for rose. The most common types of red wine grapes used for making rose are Grenache, Sangiovese, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsault, and Pinot Noir.

Nearly any grape that produces red wine can be used to make rose, but most vintners have a specific favourite. Red grape varieties are used for making rose because skin contact and a method called Saignee reduction decreases red colour in wine. Since pink grapes do not exist, Roses own pinkish color comes from the red grapes, which are exposed to the wine blend for a

shorter period of time than in red wines. Rose itself is actually made similar to the way that red wine is made, except the skins of red grapes are removed sooner during fermentation. The skins are retained throughout the fermentation to allow the wine to take on grape colour, flavour, and tannins, just like in the production of red wine.

Roses may be made of several varieties, but it is the extraction of grapes from juice early on in the process that causes different colors and flavors. A common misconception is that roses can be made from mixing red wine with white wine as well, but this process is actually frowned upon in the wine community.
